Abstract

184,196. Snow, W. H. Jan. 31, 1921 Rolling and squeezing.-In a machine for rolling, pressing, or similarly treating leather, the pressure on the material is released or exerted and the machine is reversed by power from the driving-shaft or other moving part of the machine through the medium of a friction clutch under the control of the operator. The rollers 5, 6, Fig. 1, are driven by gearing from the shaft 9 provided with a fast pulley 10 and loose pulleys 11, 12 with which engage open and crossed driving-belts. The pressure on the leather is exerted by weights 17 attached to rod 18 carried by a lever 19, which is pivoted at 20 to the framework of the machine, and from which the upper roller 5 is suspended. The rod 18 is pivoted at its lower end to a toothed sector 29, Fig. 2, gearing with teeth 28 on the hub of an arm 27 loose on a .continuously-rotating shaft 24. To the free end of the arm 27 is fixed a friction-strap 32 which encircles a drum 26 rotating on the shaft 24, the free end of the strap being connected to an eccentric pin 33 carried by a spindle 34 which is rotatably mounted in the end of the arm 27 and is provided with an arm 35 acted on by a spring 36 to keep the strap slack. A cord 37 attached to the arm 35 is wound round a bush 38 fast on the shaft 24 and is connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever 40 operated by a footlever 42. When the foot-lever is depressed, the cord 37 operates the arm 35 to tighten the strap 32, which, with the arm 27, is carried round by the drum 36 and so raises the weights 17. The lever 19 is limited in its upward movement by a stop and is held at the upper limit by maintaining pressure on the foot-lever, when the parts 26, 38 slip relatively to the parts 32, 37. On releasing the foot-lever, springs 41, 36 act to restore the parts to their original position. The pressure may be exerted by springs, or, if desired, the pressure may be exerted from the shaft 24 through the medium of a friction clutch and released by weights or springs. For reversing the rotation of the rollers, a shaft 48, having a square end 52 mounted in a correspondingly-shaped opening in the shaft 24, is provided with a bevelwheel 49 which normally slips over but which engages, when the shaft 48 is pushed inwardly, with a complementary bevel sector 50. An arm 53 on the sector is connected through links 54, 57 and a bell-crank lever 55 with a rod 58 mounted to slide in a rocking lever 60 pivoted at 61 and provided with an arm 62 connected to the beltshifter 65. The link 57 is connected at an intermediate point in its length with an arm 67 on a bevel sector 68 which co-operates with a friction bevel 69 on the shaft 8 of the lower roller. From the position shown in Fig. 1, when the shaft 48 is pushed inwardly to operate the friction gear 49, 50, the parts are caused to assume the positions shown in full lines, Fig. 4 and so reverse the rotation of the rollers. The bevel 69 on the shaft 8 then operates the sector 68 to pull the link 57 to the left, the upper end thereof sliding down the reversed rocking lever 60 to restore the lever 55 to its original position and reset the mechanism for the next reversal, when a similar set of movements occurs.
