VariabLe-speed gearing; clutches. - Friction gearing of the kind comprising a cone c, Figs. 1 and 2, engaged by rollers f , f<1> movable upon shafts d, e parallel to the generating lines of the cone is operated by a lever i, which moves the rollers towards and from the cone and also along the shafts d, e. The shafts d, e, which are driven through bevel gears d<2>, e<2> from a driving-shaft a, are pivoted about their inner ends d<1>, e<1> and wards by springs c<2> acting on snugs a<10>. When the rollers f, , f<1> are slid into the plane of the clutch, these sectors are thrust inwards two at a time so that claws a<9> on their inner sides engage recesses a<4> in a clutch member a<3> secured to the shaft a.
