Variable-speed epicyclic gearing; clutches, friction.-Epicyclic change-speed gearing is combined with flexible - band clutches which are operated in succession by plungers so as to bring into action a low speed and a higher speed progressively. In Figs. 7 and 8, a form is shown suitable for motor-vehicles and boats. A casing A upon the driving-shaft carries two bands B, B<1>, the free ends of which are adapted to be tightened upon loose drums D, D' by springs K acting through toggles C, C<1>. The toggle links C' have balancing-parts C<4>, which carry bowls C<2> adapted to be engaged by plungers I, I<1> to disengage the bands. The drum D carries pairs of planet-gears G, G<2> meshing respectively with a pinion F upon the driven shaft E and with a pinion D<2> secured to the boss of the drum D<1>. A sleeve D<3> extending from the drum D is engaged by a detent J, which keeps the drum D from turning backwards. When a sleeve H which carries the plungers I, I<1> is in its extreme position on the left of Fig. 8, the bands B, B<1> are both disengaged, and the casing A turns idly. When the sleeve H is moved to the right, the plunger I<1> comes out of action, and the band B<1> grips the drum D'. The detent J comes into action and the epicyclic train operates to drive the shaft E at a relatively low speed. Further movement of the sleeve H withdraws the plunger I also and causes the band B also to grip. The gearing then turns solid, yielding the high speed. In a modified arrangement, a threeelement gear train is combined with band clutches operated as described in Specification 834/11.
