Variable-speed epicyclic gearing ; clutches, friction.-In epicyclic variable - speed gearing, the driving-shaft d carries a bevel-pinion c<1> with a sleeve c, on which are carried a loose bevel-wheel f<1> and planet pinions e carried by a drum a integral with the driven pulley b. The -loose wheel f<1> carries a drum f which, for low speed, may be braked by an exterior band, and, for solid drive, may be clutched to the drum a by means of any suitable clutch. The clutch described comprises two or more segments g turning with the drum u and normally engaged with the drum f by means of cams carried by levers g<3> bearing on cams on the segment ends, the levers being operated by a sliding sleeve h. A spiral spring g<1> fits recesses in the segments, and disengages them from the drum f. A starting-ratchet c<2> is formed on the sleeve c. According to the Provisional Specification, the clutch may slide on the drum a.
