4589. Monk, H. March 6. Variable-speed gearing.-Relates to two-speed epicyclic gearing in which chains are employed. Sun chain-wheels A, A' rotate upon a fixed spindle B and are secured to sleeves which project from a casing C, a driven chain-wheel I being also secured to one sleeve and a double clutch member G being slidably mounted on the other, which is square. The casing C, which rotates loosely upon these sleeves, is made in two parts secured together by bolts D, D'. One of these bolts D' is made the axle of a pair of planet chain-pinions E, E<1> rigidly secured together. Chains F, F<1> pass respectively round the wheels A, A' and the pinions E, E'. The casing C is driven by a chain or belt, and a solid highspeed drive is produced by the member G being engaged with it. For the low speed, the wheel A<1> is kept from rotating by the member G being moved into engagement with a fixed clutch member H.
