23,459. Frost, E. Oct. 23. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-Relates to epicyclic two-speed and reversing gearing suitable for tri-cars and other motor-vehicles, in which the central shaft does not transmit power but serves as a countershaft for chain gearing. This shaft A, which is rotatably mounted in fixed bearings B, carries a brake-drum C and a sun-pinion D fast upon it. A sun-pinion J is connected by a sleeve to a sprocket J3 driven from the engine by a chain. A sun-pinion I is connected by a sleeve to a sprocket I<3> which drives the road-wheel &c. Sets of planet-pinions G, E, H meshing with the pinions I, D, J, respectively, are keyed upon sleeves F supported upon bolts F<2> passing through a casing K. The fast speed is effected by sliding a clutchmember L upon a square &c. part M of the shaft A into engagement with a member L<2> formed upon the sprocket I<3>. The second speed is effected by releasing the clutch and holding the drum K by a brake. Reversal is effected by holding the pinion D against rotation by applying a brake to the drum C.
