Abstract

18,801. Humber, Ltd., and Easom, F. Sept. 18. Variable - speed gearing. - In three - speed hub gearing for velocipedes &c. of the type in which two sets of planet pinions B, B<1>, carried by the driving-element B<*> and the hub, respectively, engage a freely-mounted sliding sun pinion adapted to be clutched to the axle, the sun pinion is replaced by two pinions A, A<1>, operated by a crosspin D<1> and normally pressed together by springs E, E'. Thus, for the direct drive, the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 4 when the pinions, free to rotate, are clutched together by end teeth a'. For the high speed, the pinion A is moved to the right to engage fixed clutch teeth c, so that the hub is driven through the planet pinions B and the teeth H<1>. When the cross-pin is returned to normal position and the sun pinion A<1> pushed back, the sun pinion A is released by the spring E, while the other sun pinion is brought into engagement with the fixed clutch teeth c<1>. The drive is then at low speed through the internally-toothed ring B' and the pinions B'. A collar upon the axle limits the extent to which the sun pinions are moved by their respective springs.
