Abstract

6618. Pinson, W. C., and Clarke, W. March 20. Variable-speed gearing.-In a device for effecting the sliding and locking of the sun pinion of a velocipede variable-speed gear, a turning cone J has spiral grooves j<1> engaged by studs m upon a sleeve M, which, provided with pegs ml to engage longitudinal channels n in the axle, is connected by an internally screwed ring J<2> and balls j<2> to the sun pinion C, so that, by the operation of an arm R, the cone is turned and the sun pinion moved from engagement with the carrier at c into engagement with the fixed clutch teeth h. A spring P connected to a fixed arm N returns the parts to normal position when the tension upon the cord p is relieved. To facilitate the engagement of the teeth c with the teeth h, the fixed teeth are thinned down from their leading towards their rear ends, as shown in Fig. 5. The collar H is prevented from turning by flats d upon the axle fitting within a groove d<1> upon the face of the collar.
