Abstract
22,580. Pedersen, M. Nov. 21, 1912. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing suitable for motor and other cycles comprises planet gears 26, 35, 33 adapted to turn together on ball bearings in a hub shell 23. At one end of this compound planet member is a male cone 32, supported by balls running in a female race 30 carried by the shell 23. At the other end, there is an internal female race adapted to contain balls which run round a male race 25. The race 25 is supported on a part 24 also carried by the shell 23. The gear 26 is driven by an internally-toothed ring 1, which is connected through a safety slipping clutch 3 to a driving-sprocket 2. The gear 36 is adapted to slide over a fixed spindle 60 to vary the speed. The gear 36 is always in mesh with the gear 35, which is wide. A central gear 40 meshing with the gear 33 is connected by a ratchet clutch 34 to a sleeve 39, which is secured to the drum 42. In the configuration shown, the gear 36 is connected to the shell 23 by clutch teeth 37. The gearing turns solid for the high speed. When the gear 36 is moved to the right to disengage the teeth 37, a ' free engine ' is obtained if the drum 42 is free to turn. If the drum 42 is held by the brake, the clutch 34 operates to hold the gear 40 stationary, and the low speed results. The intermediate speed is effected by sliding gear 36 to the right until clutch teeth 38 upon it engage teeth on the sleeve 39, and subsequently braking the drum 42. The gear 36 is operated by a rod which slides in the axle 60 and is engaged at its outer end by a pivoted lever 46. The lever 46 and a brake-actuating lever are operated in unison by a doubly-acting cam 45. By appropriate alterations, two speeds only, or four speeds, may be obtained.
