Abstract

9190. Griffin, F. A., and Lea & Francis. May 2. Variable-speed gearing ; clutches.-All the parts of a cycle two-speed epicyclic gear are readily detachable as a whole and individually. For the high or normal speed, the sun pinion A engages the internally-toothed boss B<3> of a planet-pinion carrier B<2> screwed to the hub, so that the gear turns as a whole ; for low speed, the operation of a wire connected to a cross-pin H brings the sun pinion into engagement with a stationary toothed ring J, so that the hub is driven through an internally-toothed shell C', C and the pinions B. A flanged sleeve G upon the fixed spindle is bored to fit over the end of a second sleeve F which carried the sun pinion between a flange F' and the end of the sleeve G, the pin H being passed through coincident holes in the two sleeves. The planet pinions, mounted on detachable studs B<1>, are retained in position by a ring or plate K slipped over the studs and held by split pins or the like. Ball bearings N, M' are provided between the hub and the part C<1>, and between the boss B<3> and a part M. A spring L tends to keep the gear in its normal position. In putting the parts together, the sleeves F, G and the carrier B<2> with its pinions are mounted upon the spindle and inserted from the enlarged end of the hub. The shell C' with the toothed ring C mounted therein is then positioned, the balls N being inserted. The double cone e is then screwed upon the spindle until it abuts against a collar e<3>, the balls e<1> being put into place. Balls e<2> are inserted between the driving-member O<1> of the free-wheel clutch and the cone e, and after the pinion carrier has been screwed to the hub, the adjusting-cone e<4> is screwed home. The clutch shown is of the type described in Specification No. 9880, A.D. 1900, [Abridgment Class Bearings &c.]. The carrier may be provided with a number of dowels or projections to engage corresponding openings or recesses in the hub ; or the carrier may screw into the hub or engage the hub by dogs, set-screws, or two or more dowel-pins taking into corresponding holes. The ring J is conveniently screwed on to the spindle with a right-hand thread, so that, should anything go wrong with the gear when the low speed is in operation, any tendency to turn the ring in a forward direction will unscrew it from the spindle.
