Abstract
576,339. Variable-speed gearing; clutches. BECHLER, A. Jan. 4, 1944, No. 136. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1943. [Class 80 (ii)] A high and low speed gear for the shaft of an automatic lathe, such as the cam-shaft, comprises loose pulleys 8, 9 with conical clutch surfaces 6, 7 driven at different speeds and adapted to be engaged alternatively with an intermediate double clutch cone 3 secured to the driven shaft 2. This engagement is automatically effected by an actuating fork 15 operated from a cam 25 which moves the pulley 9 into engagement with the clutch cone 3 whilst at the same time disengaging the pulley 8 against springs 16 by means of pins 12 passing through member 3. Reverse movement of fork 15 allows the springs to engage pulley 8 and disengage pulley 9. Suitable thrust bearings 13, 14, 17 and 20 are provided to facilitate the operation.
