Abstract

599,431. Reverse - gear. SNOW-NABSTEDT GEAR CORPORATION. Aug. 14, 1944, No. 15478. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1943. [Classes 80(i) and 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Epicyclic marine reversing - gear comprises a planet-carrier 41 which can be held by a friction brake-band J, for reverse, and is formed of two relatively axially movable splined parts 41, 54, having complementary conical surfaces which, for solid forward drive, clamp frictionally between them a clutch-cone 34, attached to a sun-wheel 30, fast on a driving sleeve 24. The planetcarrier 41 carries intermeshing planets 46, 48, engaging respectively the driving sun 30 and a driven sun 49a, fast on an aligned driven shaft D, which drives a final offset driven shaft E through reductiongearing, described below. Spring-pressed plungers 65, 69 (shown dotted) separate the carrier parts 41, 54 to disengage the coneclutch 34. The cone-clutch 34 and brakeband J are conjointly operated by a sliding thrust-collar 101, rightward movement of which, to the Fig. 1 position, engages the clutch through a toggle 106 and sliding plungers 110, which may act through helical springs housed inside the spindles of the planets 46. The collar 101 operates the brake-band J through a lever 95, link 93, and a compound lever comprising a curved lever 85, Fig. 10, pivoted to one end 79 of the brake-band and having a pin-andslot connection 88 with a second lever 87 pivoted on the other end 80 of the band and having a cam face 90 acting on the other end 79. The reaction of the brake-band J is taken through helical compression springs in both directions. The reduction gear comprises a driving pinion 132 and a driven internally or externally toothed wheel 118 on the offset final driven shaft E. Bearing support for the pinion 132 is provided by a spigot on a flanged member 128, which is mounted on a roller bearing on the shaft E and is bolted at 126 to the gear housing. To cater for alternative directions of rotation, the single driving pinion may be interchangeable with an idler pair. To provide a positional adjustment for the offset driven shaft E, the reduction gear housing may be adjusted to a variety of positions about the axis of the shaft D.
