28,593. Faulkner, J. W., and Hilton, G. T. Dec. 27. Motor cycles; driving- mechanism.-A two-speed gear for motor cycles and the like comprises a toothed wheel on the live axle, driving the belt pulley through intermediate pinions carried by a disc, which may rotate or remain stationary. Fig. 1 shows a front view, and Fig. 4 a section, of the gearing. The toothed wheel A on the live axle a<1> drives the pulley C through the pinions B on axles b<1>, which are carried by the discs D. To the wheel A is attached the ring of teeth a', as shown in Fig. 2. The disc E, which is capable of lateral movement, has teeth e<1>, e', which engage with the teeth a', c<1>, on wheels A, C respectively. This produces the normal or high speed. By adjusting the position of the disc E, the projections e<3> may be made to engage with those d<1> on the disc D, and the disc E also engages with the fixed part F so that the discs D are held stationary, and the low speed is produced. Again, the disc E may be totally disengaged, as shown in Fig. 4. In the modification shown in Fig. 11, the clutch e<4> connects the wheels A, C to produce the high speed, and the strap f<1> holds the drum d' connected to the discs D to produce the low speed.
