690,378. Clutches; reversing-gearing. MATHERS, J. H., [trading as MATHWAY MARINE]. July 25, 1949 [June 24, 1948], No. 17002/48. Class 80 (ii). Actuating means for a plate clutch comprises two or more tubular toggle bars 7 each pivoted at its inner end to a sleeve 69, slidable on the driven shaft 53 under the control of a collar 136 operable by a lever 85, and each housing a pin 66 pressed by a spring 67 into engagement with one arm 63 of a bell-crank lever, the other arm 60 of which carries an adjustable screw 62 engaging the end of a longitudinally-movable clutch-engaging pin 56. The arm 63 extends through a slot 64 in the outer end of the bar 7, and, in clutch-disengaged condition (as shown in the upper part of Fig. 3), abuts against the outer end of the slot 64. As the sleeve 69 is moved to the left to clutch-engaged position, in which it passes just beyond vertical dead-centre, (as shown in the lower part of Fig. 3), the outer end of the slot 64 moves clear of the arm 63, so that the arm 63 is then operated solely through the spring 67 and by the centrifugal effect of the parts. In the marine reversing-gear shown in Fig. 1, the clutch effects forward drive and comprises two sets of plates, the left-hand set 36 connecting an engine-driven drum 27 to a drum 40 and the right-hand set 46 connecting the drum 40 to a drum 50 secured to the shaft 53. The clutch-engaging pins 56 slide in projections 122 of the drum 40, to which the bellcrank levers 60, 63 are pivoted, and act on the plates 46 which in turn act on the plates 36 through interposed pins 44, so that the two sets engage simultaneously. The control lever 85 is operated as described in Specification 663,.078. Reverse drive is obtained by releasing the clutch and braking the drum 40, which carries bevel planet gears 79 engaging bevel wheels 74, 77 secured to the drums 27, 50.
