Abstract

297,659. Fowler, C. H., and Ellis, E. D. April 28, 1928. Power steering-gear of the kind in which the steering handwheel controls the steering axle either directly or through power mechanism, comprises friction clutches controlling the power mechanism. The handwheel shaft b can be clutched at c<1>, b<1>, either to the steering shaft c for hand actuation, or to a hollow screw shaft h for power steering. The shaft h slides, by means of a cross-head k, the movable members i, j of two friction clutches, the other members l, m being constantly driven in opposite directions through bevel gearing n. The slidable clutch members are keyed on the shaft c which can thus be driven in either direction, according to which clutch is engaged. The clutch b', c<1> is operated by a hand lever g, near the hand-wheel. The power gear is automatically disengaged if the steering axle is turned through an excessive amount, by means of a lever q which contacts with adjustable stops r on the axle and acts on the screm shaft h through linkwork and bevel gearing o, p. Cam gear may be used instead of the screw gear h.
