Abstract

630,137. Reversing-gearing; clutches. LANGDON, A. G. Sept. 5, 1946, No. 26713. [Class 80 (ii)] A bevel reversing-gearing, or its equivalent, is housed within a casing which is axially slidable to engage pre-set clutch plates for forward drive and to alternatively disconnect the drive ; reverse drive being obtained by braking the casing. A driving shaft 3 carries a bevel gear 4, the boss 4a of which is splined for engagement with a set of clutch plates 8 which are co-actable with clutch plates 9 splined to the casing 11, the pressure between the plates being preset by the screws 12. The casing 11 has inwardly projecting bosses 17 which engage the ends of a spider 15 carrying the intermediate bevel gears 5, and carried at its centre by extensions 3a, 7a of the driving and driven shafts 3, 7 respectively. The driving and driven bevels 4, 6 are located axially together with the shafts 3, 7 by sleeves 19, 23 clamped between the hubs of the bevels and the supporting bearings 20, 24. The hub of the bevel 6 carries the end plate 26 of the casing 11, which endplate has slidable pins 27 moved by cams 28 against an expanding washer 29 to move the casing axially to engage or disengage the clutch 8, 9. The cams 28 are turned by a sleeve 31 sliding on the sleeve 23 and actuated by a lever 35 through a fork 33. The lever 35 also carries a peg 45 which engages with a rocking lever 44 to depress a pin 42 and apply a band brake 36, against the force of a spring 41, to the sleeve 11 for reverse drive. , In a modification the clutch plates are positioned in the opposite end of the casing 11.
