Abstract

619,046. Clutches. VINCENT, P. C., and VINCENT, H. R. D. CO., Ltd. Jan. 30, 1946, No. 3013. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A clutch comprises coaxial driving and driven members to one of which is secured a drum and part of a friction clutch and on the other are independently mounted a number of clutch shoes, the other part of the friction clutch being connected with the shoes through independent toggle levers and the shoes being spring-urged away from the drum. As applied to a clutch for a motor cycle a driving sprocket 10 is rigid with a clutch drum 12 having slots 21 at its end, in which is drivingly mounted a plate 20 of an axially engageable friction clutch. The driven shaft 13 is in splined connection with a carrier plate 14 having pivots 17 on which two radially engageable clutch shoes 15 are mounted. A bush 41 on the nut 40 which secures the plate 14, carries a member 28 to which the clutch plates 22, 23 are secured against rotation by the pins 25, 31, the pins 25 passing through the thimbles 24 and springs 29 which provide engaging pressure for the axially engageable clutch 22, 20, 23. The plate 22 has adjustable means 45 at its centre which co-operate with a movable rod 42 in the centre of the driving shaft to allow manual disengagement of the axial clutch. Pivoted on the pins 25 are toggles 34 which are pivoted on pins 35 to the trailing ends of the shoes 15 centralised by shouldered spring-loaded plungers 37 abutting on the pins 25. When a driving torque is applied to the drum 12 and a resisting torque to the shaft 13 and the axially engageable clutch is manually engaged, the member 20 is rotated by the torque transmitted by the latter clutch and causes the toggles 34 to engage the radially engageable clutch. This action takes place in either direction. In modifications, provision is made for the use of more than two radiallyacting shoes and for decreased torque transmitting capabilities with reversed direction of rotation.
