639,356. Combined clutch and brake. HOFSTADT, J. A. G. M., VAN DER. March 18, 1948, No, 8075. Convention date, Aug. 25, 1947. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a combined servo-brake and drive disengaging mechanism, more particularly for high-speed textile machinery, the drive is transmitted from the power unit by belt to the pulley 8, which is engaged under pressure from spring 16 by clutch plates 10 and 11 splined to 'the shaft 6 carrying at its end a claw coupling 18 for coupling to the machine to be driven. A drum member 1, which has a flange 19 normally spaced away from the clutch plate 11, is rotatably secured by studs 2 fitting in helical slots 3, to a drum 4, secured to a fixed support 5. When it is required to brake the machine, the drum 1 is rotated, by manual means not shown, so that due to the action of the slots 3, the clearance between the part 19 and plate 11 is taken up. Thereafter, the rotation of plate 11, by driving round the drum 1, increases the pressure of engagement until the machine is stopped. At the same time, the drive is disengaged from the pulley 8 by the movement away of the plate 11 against the pressure of spring 16.
