646,027. Friction clutches. MASSEY, Ltd., B. & S., and FOSTER, J. Feb. 11, 1947, No. 3935. [Class 80(ii)] To avoid hammering on their splines 5 when disengaged, the single or multiple driving plates 4 have externally coned surfaces pressed by springs 12, 11, 16 against internally coned seats on rings 10 secured to the driving clutch-element 1 in which the plates 4 are splined. Engagement is effected by admitting compressed air through a stationary fitting 19 to act on a diaphragm-sealed piston 14 bolted to the end driving-plate 4.
