Abstract
203,731. Hall, R. April 10, 1922. Clutches, claw and friction.-The pump of a motor fire waggon or tender is driven by chain or other gearing from the vehicle power shaft through a combined friction and claw clutch. A member b secured to the crank-shaft a is formed with a female cone d, clutch projections or holes r, and a pulley face c to drive the cooling-fan. An intermediate shaft e, unsupported by the shaft a, carries driving-means for the pump, such as a silent-chain sprocket (not shown), and has splined to it the male cone f, pressed by a strong spring m bearing on a flange k and on a shoulder on, or a collar n fixed to, the shaft e. The cone f may be covered with friction material g. A member p, pressed by a weaker spring t, slides on the boss i of the member f and has pins s passing through the web thereof to engage the projections or recesses r. A clutch lever (not shown) bears on the flange w of the part p and is normally held to keep the clutch out of engagement. Partial release of this lever allows the spring m to engage the friction clutch, which is followed in action by the clutch o, r on coniplete release of the lever after slip has ceased. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 20088/14.
