Abstract

264,588. Humphris, F. Oct. 21, 1925. Clutches, claw; gearing for stopping and starting machinery.-In order to prevent overrunning of the driven parts or rebound of the driving- member in one-revolution and like clutches for presses, shafting, etc.; two oppositely-directed spring-actuated pawls c, c', Fig. 2, are pivoted on a driven disc or flange, a, one or both of the pawls having a stepped contacting-face c<3> to engage stepped or other faces d<1> on abutments d carried in a ring- e, integral with or secured to a driving-wheel g, the disengaging gear being adapted to allow clutch-operation in either direction. The face c<2> of the normally-driving pawl c may also be stepped. A declutching member f, Fig. 3, actuated by spring-biassed linkage preferably embodying tripping-devices to ensure its operation after a predetermined period, may be moved in a radial direction, but, as shown, carries guiding-pins f<2>, which slide parallel to the driven shaft b in the machine frame, and is provided with a facial cam-ridge f<1>, the operative surface f<6> of which successively engages lugs c<4>, c<5> on the pawls c, c<1>. In the opposite direction of rotation the surface f<6> contacts also with a roller or rollers j on the. pawl c<1>. A spring-pressed stop-pin n or. the driven member a slides on an inclined surface p on the part and finally snaps into a recess q to lock the driven parts. A second surface p (not shown) is provided for the oppositedirection of rotation. More than one pin m may be used. In a modification, the pawls c, c<1>, Fig. 8, are adapted to be declutched simultaneously by the engagement with cam-surfaces f<6>, provided on a radially-slidable declutching member f, of a. roller j<1>, connected by toggle-links k to arms c<6> on the pawls. Auxiliary cam-surfaces p and a recess q coact with a radiallypressed stop-pin n. Continuous driving may be effected by releasing a spring-pressed bolt r to engage the member f.
