Coal-cutting machines.-In a coal-cutting machine with a safety rope device for use in inclined seams, one end of the rope 1 is connected to a balance weight 9 or a spring or the equivalent, either directly or through levers or pulleys, so as to maintain an even tension on the tail end of the rope. The rope passes round a ratchet drum 2 and also round a brake drum 3 with internal brake shoes 10 controlled by a hand nut 15, link 13, and a pivoted lever 12. The brake drum may be positively locked by a spring- pressed cluch member 16 keyed to a stationary shaft 17 and controlled by a member 22 with a transverse pin 23 cooperating with a channel 24 to hold the clutch member in inoperative position.
