Abstract

792,321. Machinery safety devices. CROSLAND, Ltd., W. Aug. 13, 1956 [Aug. 12, 1955], No. 23250/55. Class 80 (4) In a cutting, creasing or embossing press of the kind comprising a rise and fall guard to move the operator's hand clear of the platen when feeding takes place, and side guards in front of the platen in such a position that should the operator's hand remain over the guard it will come into contact with a trip rail and move the latter, thereby causing the drive clutch to be disengaged, a brake to be applied and the machine to be stopped, the usual starting pedal is connected to the clutchoperating mechanism through a shaft divided into two parts, one part rotatable by the pedal and normally connected to the other part by a latch carried by a sleeve secured to the first part and engaging a pawl carried by a sleeve secured to the other part, the pawl being lifted by movement of the trip rail to disconnect the two parts and disengage the clutch. The pedal rotates the shaft part A, Figs. 1, 2 and 4, to which a split sleeve a is secured by a bolt a<SP>1</SP>, while the shaft part B controls the clutch and has secured to it a split sleeve b by means of bolts b<SP>1</SP>. The shaft A is urged clockwise in Fig. 2 by a spring c, the movement being limited by an adjustable stud g engaging the machine frame C<SP>1</SP>. Pivoted to a lug d of the sleeve b and urged counter-clockwise thereon in Fig. 2, by a spring d<SP>1</SP> is a pawl D which engages a latch A<SP>1</SP> on the sleeve a, so that counterclockwise rotation of the latch by the pedal rotates the sleeve b and engages the clutch. Operation of the trip rail E<SP>1</SP> by the operator's hand rotates a shaft E and raises a lever F underlying the pawl D to disengage the latter from the latch A<SP>1</SP>, whereupon, whether or not the pedal is still held depressed, the sleeve b is disconnected from the sleeve a, and the clutch operating fork moves by spring action to release the clutch, rotating the shaft B. The clutch is normally held in the engaged position by a plunger acting on the fork and forming the end of a rod to which the rail E<SP>1</SP> is connected. When the rail E<SP>1</SP> is moved to stop the machine, the plunger is withdrawn. The movement of the fork to release the clutch also applies a brake. The trip rail E<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, carrying a guard H<SP>1</SP>, can be retained in the safety position against its return spring by a catch lever H abutting a stop h<SP>2</SP>. To release the rail, the latter is moved out of a notch h<SP>1</SP>, and the lever H is pivoted away from the stop h<SP>2</SP> against the action of a spring h<SP>3</SP>.
