Abstract

684,770. Embossing, &c., presses. CROSLAND, Ltd., W., and WILSHAW, F. H. Dec. 4, 1950. [Dec. 2, 1949], No. 30957/49. Class 100 (ii). [Also in Group XXIV] Stopping and tripping arrangements.-In a cutting, creasing and embossing press in which the drive to the machine is through a clutch, normally controlled by a pedal, and which has a rise-and-fall guard which moves the operator's hand when feeding takes place, and also a hand trip rail carrying side guards across the machine in front of the platen so that should the operator's hand remain over the guard it will come into contact with the trip rail and move the latter, thereby disengaging the clutch and applying a brake to stop the machine, the pedal is connected to the clutch through a sliding member formed in two parts normally connected together by a pivoted catch which is operated by the movement of the trip rail to disconnect the two parts and allow the part connected to the clutch to be operated by a spring to disengage the clutch, while any movement of the part connected to the pedal will not operate the clutch. The clutch is actuated by a clutch fork C by means of the reciprocation of a tube D to which is connected a rod D' by a catch d pivoted to a bracket d<SP>1</SP> on the tube, the rod D<SP>1</SP> being reciprocated by the pedal D'. When the pedal is depressed to engage the clutch, a catch e' on a lever e engages a shoulder d' on a socket member D' on the rod D<SP>1</SP> to hold the pedal down until the hand trip rail E is moved to release the catch and allow the clutch to be disengaged, a spring d<SP>4</SP> then moving the rod D<SP>1</SP> to the right. When the rail E is moved with the pedal held depressed, it causes the lever e to abut an arm d<SP>5</SP> of the catch d to disconnect the parts D, D<SP>1</SP>, whereupon the tube D is allowed to disengage the clutch, being moved by a spring coiled on a rod F connected to an arm C<SP>2</SP> of the clutch fork, which spring abuts the machine frame and a sleeve on the rod F to move the latter axially, and, by means of a cone thereon, move a brake into engagement with a wheel on the shaft B which drives the platen.
