Abstract

588,577. Machinery guards. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and JARVIS, W. W. G. Jan. 16, 1945, No. 1254. [Class 80 (iv)] In a power operated machine tool in which power is supplied thereto through a slipping clutch, the driving shaft of the machine has releasable means for preventing its rotation, said means being released from a position in which it prevents rotation of the shaft by a connection with the operating pedal only after the latter has been moved sufficiently to depress the guard into the safety position. As shown, a guillotine has a fixed guard (not shown) mounted on arms 6 at the front of the machine and a sliding guard 21 to guard the operator at the rear of the machine. The guard 21 is connected by a link 20, lever 18 and link 17 to a lever 13 secured to the pivot shaft 14 of the operating pedal 5. A pin 15 on the lever 13 engages a slot in the forked end of a lever 12, the other end of which is slotted to receive a crank arm 11 on a spindle 10. The latter also carries a catch 8 engageable with a notch 9 in a collar fixed on the driving shaft 7, the latter being connected to the source of power through a slipping clutch. When the operator at the front of the machine depresses the pedal 5 to start the machine the guard 21 is moved downwards to a completely closed position before the pin 15 on lever 13 reaches the end of the slot in lever 12 to cause the catch 8 to be moved out of the notch in the collar, thereby permitting operation of the machine. The guard 21 is locked in its closed position by a pivoted catch 23 engaging a pin 22 on the guard. When the guillotine blade 3 reaches the bottom of its stroke, a tappet 30 on the guillotine beam engages a rod 25 which acts on a pivoted lever 27 to release the catch 23 and allow the guard 21 to rise under the action of a counterweight 29 fixed to the shaft 14. If the guard 21 does not complete its guarding movement the catch 8 is not disengaged from the notch 9 and the machine is not operated. The guard 21 may be actuated by electrical means controlled by the pedal 5.
