Abstract

Controlling variable-speed gearing.-In order to impart definite stepped displacements to a lever 4, Fig. 1, which controls the variable-speed gear of a motor-cycle, repeated oscillations are given to a pedal-lever 1, which actuates the lever 4 through ratchet crowns 5, 6, alternatively, one for each rotary direction. The lever 4 extends from a double ratchet crown 3 loose upon a shaft 2 to which the lever 1 is secured. The crowns 5, 6 are also loose and are adapted to be actuated one at a time by cam projections 7, 10, fast upon the shaft 2. One projection 7 is moving its crown 5 into engagement with crown 3 while the other projection 10 is moving its crown 6 out clear; continued movement of lever 1 until arrested by stop 1<c> or stop 1<d> then moves lever 4 one step, where it is held by suitable means. The lever 4 may be moved a further step in the same direction, or a step back, on the next oscillation of lever 1 according to whether end ' H1 ' or end 'L0' is depressed. A spring 29 returns shaft 2 to neutral. Controls for operations incidental to the gear change such as engine clutch, or throttle, or exhaust valve, are effected from the initial foot &c., lever 1. For this purpose, the shaft 2 is provided with a cam 19, Fig. 4, for each such control adapted to coact with a lever 20 to pull a Bowden cable 21. In Fig. 6 is shown means for producing a doubled displacement by the Bowden mechanism by having two actuated levers 20, 20<a>, acting on the cable 21 and the guide-tube 21<a> respectively. Means forgiving a visible indication of the speed in use is described. The arrangement of Fig. 1 is. adapted to move a gear-change lever 36, Figs. 9 and 10, in a gate with an H slot upon a car by connecting a system of cams 32 - - 85 to the stepwise-moved lever 4. Cam slots 37 in plates 32, 33 move the lever 36 perpendicularly to the plane of Fig. 10, and edge cam plates 34, 35 move it in that plane. These cams act on a plunger 38 resiliently carried by the lever 36.
