Abstract

199,234. Hounsfield, L. H. May 23, 1922. Controlling variable-speed gearing. -Selector mechanism especially for epicyclic variable-speed gearing is arranged so that the depression of a pedal A releases the brake or clutch in action and disconnects the drive. For each brake &c. operating device P there is a short lever G in one of the slots H of a gate, which short lever carries a rocking lever J upon a pivot K. Each device P is connected by a rod O to its own rocking lever, and all the rocking levers are linked to the pedal A. Each rocking lever has a spring S, which coacts with stops Q, R. To bring, say, the top speed into action, the pedal is depressed, and all the levers G move in their slots, the stops Q being engaged. The springs S yield and no brake &c. is supplied. A loose hand-lever E is thrust into the slot of the speed selected and locked there by a pawl V. On release of the pedal, the selected short lever G is held while the others return to neutral, the spring S of the selected lever device asserts itself, and the brake &c. is applied, too fierce application being prevented by a stop R. Depression of the pedal reverses the last operation and disconnects the drive. The reverse gear is preferably operated by a link connected directly to the lever E, which is then moved in the opposite direction. In a two-speed gear, the lowspeed may be brought into operation by the hand lever E acting against a short lever such as G connected directly by a link to the brake-applying device. Release of such a device by depressing the pedal A is assured by forming the upper end G<1> of the lever G of the high-speed as a cam adapted to disengage the pawl V from its catch W<1> on the gate.
