Controlling variable-speed gearing.-Gear-control mechanism for giving a stepped movement to, say, a control spindle a, comprises two separate pawls b<5>, b<6>, Fig. 2., pivoted at b<3> at a greater radial distance than are the ratchet teeth a', a<8> which they actuate. This construction is readily adapted for moving two or more steps at a time. In the form of Figs. 1 and 2, the pawls b<5>, b<6>, which are pressed inwards by a spring b<7>, are supported in a hollow lever b which is oscillated from a pedal &c., not shown. The ratchet teeth are fast on spindle a. Bolts e<1> project from lever b into a frame member d, in a hollow in which is a spring d' which acts on these bolts to return the lever b to mid-position. A snug d<1> projects from frame d between the pawls which, during a stroke of the lever b, lifts the inoperative pawl clear of the teeth which are advanced towards it. In a form shown in Fig. 5, the pawls g<2>, g<3> are spaced apart on a control lever g, the stroke of which is limited by stops i<2> - - i<7> engaged by the heel of the inoperative pawl. Lever h, which carries the ratchet teeth h<1>, h<2>, can be moved two steps at a time by deflecting lever g so that one of the stops i<2> - - i<7> is missed. A construction is described in which a single pawl is operative for stepped rises in the speed, the return control-operation being effected directly through a linkage in a single stroke.
