Abstract
425,483. Variable-speed drive for ring spinning-frames. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(Reeves Pulley Co. ; Columbus, Indiana, U.S.A.) Sept. 14, 1933, No. 25526. [Class 120 (ii)] The speed of the main driving-shaft of a ring spinning-frame is determined by a variable-speed means, e.g. an electric motor driving through a pair of conical pulleys, the latter being controlled in such manner that, for a warp wind, the speed of the main shaft is automatically increased step-by-step from a low speed to a predetermined optimum high speed at which it is automatically maintained until completion, or, for a filling wind, the speed of the main shaft is increased step-by-step from a low speed to a comparatively high speed, at which it is automatically maintained for a period, and then step-by-step reduced. A constant speed motor 28, through a belt 32 and coned pulley 22, one plate 23 of the pulley 22 being movable along shaft 19 under spring resistance 24, drives the main shaft 19, which in turn operates the mechanism 20, 21, 18 to reciprocate the ring rail. Attached also to the shaft 20 is a member 134 which through an adjustable rod 133 and lever 132 oscillates a vertical shaft 76, keyed to the top of which is an arm 77 carrying at its free end a pivoted double-ended pawl 92. An adjustable clamp 108 carries a finger 111 which presses against a projection 89 on the pawl member 92 to move the latter into the inoperative position. On the counter-clockwise oscillation of the arm 77, however, projection 89 leaves the finger 111, and the pawl 92, under the action of a spring pressed conical headed plunger engaging a recess therein, moves so that the end 94 will operate on the ratchet teeth 100 to turn the wheel 99, the clockwise oscillation of the arm 77 having no effect meanwhile on the ratchet wheel 99. The latter is loose on the shaft 76 but is keyed to a sprocket wheel 95, which, through a chain 101, sprocket 43, clutch 44 and screwed shaft 35 moves the plate 29, on which the motor is mounted, so to increase the speed of shaft 19 by tightening the belt 32. After moving through an arc the pawl 92 is tripped by a spring biassed lever 116, pivoted at 115 on an adjustable clamp 113, so that it is moved to a neutral position. The pawl 92 is still gradually moved, through the building mechanism, in a counterclockwise direction until a spring biassed lever 124, pivoted at 123 on an adjustable clamp 121, trips it to bring into operation the nose 93 of the pawl 92. This nose operates on a second ratchet wheel 97, through teeth 98, also loose on the shaft 76 and keyed to the sprocket 95 so that the screwed shaft 35 is turned gradually to move the plate 29 backwardly to decrease the speed of the main shaft 19. After a further movement of the pawl in a counterclockwise direction it is tripped by a finger 131 held by an adjustable clamp 128 to the neutral position. The drive between the sprocket 43 and the shaft 35 is disconnectable by means of the clutch 44, thrown out at the limit of movement of the plate 29, in either direction, by adjustable collars 54 on a rod 53. A further safety device 59...65 is fitted to ensure declutching if for any reason the pawl 92 is not tripped by the lever 116. For a filling wind the levers 116 and 124 are adjusted in position to trip the pawl 92, which operates to control the variable speed mechanism, so that from a low starting speed the speed of the machine is gradually increased, then maintained at optimum high speed and then gradually reduced. For a warp wind, however, the levers 116 and 123 are removed from the machine, the motor-mounting plate 29 being moved through mechanism 92, 99, 95, 101, 44, 35, as previously described, gradually to increase the speed of the machine to an optimum high speed, when the clutch 44 is thrown out by the device 53, 54, at which speed it is maintained until the completion of the wind. Specification 20449/14, [Class 80 (ii)], is referred to.
