Abstract

1,005,012. Builder motion. MAREMONT CORPORATION. May 9, 1962 [May 9, 1961], No. 17930/62. Heading DID. [Also in Division F2] In a twisting-frame having elements e.g. rails carrying rings, lappets and balloon-restrictors, arranged for reciprocating movement from driving means having an oscillating output, a connecting- device is provided between the driving means and the elements that comprises an input member connected to the driving-means, an output member connected to the elements, advancing-means connected to the input and output members, and a clutch, which means, when the clutch is engaged connects the input and output members to advance the output member stepwise relatively to the input member, the clutch means being disengageable to allow the output member to return to initial position. In a preferred form, the rails are in pairs each connected by a tape connected to a pulley rotating normally with a shaft 44 Fig. 2. The ring rail tapes are secured to pulleys 40, 142 the balloon-restrictor rail tapes to pulleys 56 and the lappet rail tapes to pulleys 50. The shaft 44 is loaded by a chain 60 connected to a torsion-bar arrangement as in Specification 1,005,013 whereby the shaft is loaded sufficiently just to overbalance the downward pull of the various rails. The shaft is also connected by a chain 140, a connection-device Fig. 3, and a chain 96, to a pivoted arm reciprocated by a heart-cam. As the shaft 44 accordingly turns in one direction, the pull of the chain 60 is overcome to allow the rails to fall; as it turns in the other direction, the rails are raised by the pull of the torsion bar, the latter keeping the heart-cam and the reciprocating arm in contact. The connecting-device comprises a sleeve 100 connected to the chain 96 and a sleeve 134 connected to the chain 140. The sleeve 100 is the input element of a differential of which the output element is a sleeve 108 connected by a clutch 130 to the sleeve 134. The sleeve 100 rotates on a sleeve 102 rotatably carrying an offset gear 110 meshing with internal teeth on the sleeves 100, 108; as the sleeve 100 is oscillated by the chain 96 the parts 100, 102, 110, 108 move together. The clutch 130 being always maintained in engagement by the pull of the torsion bar, the oscillations are transmitted to member 134 and chain 140 to provide the traverse. To provide the gain, the sleeve 102 carries a ratchet wheel 116, which is partly shrouded by a shield 116 such that at the end of one stroke of the oscillations the ratchet wheel is accessible to pawls 118, 120 which act to stop rotation of the sleeve 102 so that the sleeve 108 is advanced relatively to the sleeve 100, there being more teeth on the sleeve 108 than on the sleeve 100. Re-setting mechanism. The pulleys 142, 40 are in one with the pulleys 50 and are connected to the shaft 44 by pins 42; the pulleys 56 are carried by a sleeve 59. This is normally connected to the shaft 44 by a cross-pin 164 on a rod 166 in a pair of slots in the shaft and normally engaging slots in the sleeve 59. The sleeve has a gear 156 meshing with a pinion 158 on a hand-crank shaft 160. The shaft can thus be back-wound at the end of a set to lower the rails to starting-position at which point a locking-pin 176 snaps into a recess 180 in the frame. It is now necessary further to lower the rail carrying the balloon-control rings to facilitate doffing; accordingly the rod 166 is pressed inwardly against a spring 176 so that the pin enters an annular recess in the gear 156, so that the latter can no longer drive the shaft 44 and the pulleys 142, 50 and 40 but can drive the sleeve 59 and the pulleys 56 until a stop 190 connected to the sleeve by a chain 186 engages the machine frame. The clutch between the members 108, 134 comprises a pair of cylinders in wedge-shaped recesses (Fig. 6 not shown) which in normal operation are maintained in driving-engagement in both directions of the stroke by the pull of the torsion-bar. When the crank-handle is turned for re-setting, the pull of the torsion-bar is relieved and the clutch is rendered inoperative. Accordingly, a spring 144, slightly weaker than the pull exerted by the torsion bar and secured at its ends to brackets carried by the members 100, 134 which is gradually tensioned as the member 134 advances relatively to the sleeve 100 during the wind, is freed to back -rotate the member 134 until the brackets engage to reset the pick mechanism.
