Abstract
872,623. Windscreen wipers. DUDLEY, W. May 5, 1960 [May 23, 1959], No. 17651/59. Class 138(1). The driving mechanism for oscillating a windscreen wiper arm 6 comprises a clutch having dog teeth 7 on a driving member 2 in driving engagement with notches 7a in a driven member 2a secured to the arm 6. The teeth 7 disengage from the notches 7a when the frictional resistance to the movement of the wiper blade exceeds a predetermined amount, and a roller 12 carried by an arm 4 on the member 2 engages a V-shaped abutment member on the wiper arm 6, to move the latter away. from the screen to relieve the pressure on the wiper blade. In an alternative construction the disengagement of the clutch causes the wiper arm to be pivoted away from the windscreen by the engagement of a pin thereon with an arcuate abutment secured to the windscreen. In a further embodiment the wiper arm is pivoted away from the windscreen by the engagement therewith of an abutment carried by the driving member of the clutch when this is moved axially on disengagement of the clutch.
