Abstract
787,129. Winding yarn. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. Nov. 8, 1954 [Jan. 18,1954], No. 32314/54. Class 120(2) A method of winding a package of yarn comprises the steps of rotating a core to wind a yarn thereon, reciprocating a strand of yarn along a predetermined path longitudinally of the core to lay the yarn thereon in spaced helices to form the package, separating the axis of the core and, the path, of the reciprocating strand of yarn and modifying the rate of separation between them to decrease generally the said rate throughout the winding cycle. As shown, in a machine for effecting the method, depression of the starting handle 80 releases a brake 76 from a pulley 45 and raises a pulley 54 to tighten a driven belt 43 to drive the shaft 38, which, through a belt 46 rotates the spindle 34, and through belts 52, 32, drives the shaft 26 to reciprocate a yarn. guide 28 through the intermediary of a barrel cam on the shaft 26. Rotation of the spindle 34 operates through a speedreduction gearing 178, Fig. 7, to rotate the pinion 141 to move the housing 36 about the shaft 38, the housing 36 carrying the spindle 34 and yarn package on its holder 18. The segment 140, meshing with the pinion 141 is pivotally carried by the shaft 38 and connected with the housing 36 by a link 197, the other end of which is connected to a cam 195. pivoted at 196 to the segment 140. The cam 195 bears upon a roller 199 carried by a shaft on the machine frame. The cam 195 is replaceable so that the relative motion between the segment 140 and housing 36 may be modified in any desired manner to give the required rate of separation of winding spindle 34 and traverse guide 28. The main belt 43, through a speed reduction device 205 (not shown), shaft 204 and belt 203. drives the shaft 200 of the roller 199, which is eccentrically-mounted, so that the spacing of the yarn traverse guide 28 from the package is slightly lengthened and shortened so that the end portions of each traverse are differently spaced from the ends of the package so to avoid the formation of "knuckles". If a yarn breaks, a lever 110 carrying a thread-engaging wire 124 swings to bring an abutment 128 into' the path of a power-driven member to disengage a latch 104 and raise the lever 80 to separate the driving belt 43 from the pulley 45. In order that the housing 36 may be brought back towards the guide 28 for a new wind, the reduction gearing between the spindle 34 and pinion 141 is provided with a sliding bevel gear 182 which may be kept in the disengaged position by a latch 211. The winding core 18 is locked on the spindle 34 by the movement of a hand lever 207 a finger 208 moved thereby being operatively connected to the bevel gear 182 of the speed-reduction gearing.
