Class 120(2) An automatic travelling spindle winding machine of the drum driven type comprises a plurality of winding heads each of which includes a package holder mounted on a pivoted bracket, a traverse cam, a traverse guide in operative connection with the cam, a compound gear driving connection between the spindle of the package holder and the shaft of the cam whereby the package, driven by contact with a roller common to all the heads on one side of the machine rotating at constant speed drives the traverse guide at decreasing speed due to the increase in package diameter so maintaining constant the ratio between the rotational speed of the package and the reciprocations of the traverse guide. A package 10 is mounted in a bracket 11 to move as the package builds up in an arc about the short shaft 12 in a vertical arm 13 of a bracket 14 attached to a casing housing a grooved roller, the casing being supported on a bracket 17 carried on the frame 18 of the machine. Fast on the axis 23 of the package 10 is a sprocket wheel 24 connected to a sprocket wheel 26 on the shaft 12 by a chain 25. A second sprocket wheel 27, fast with the wheel 26 is connected by a chain 28 to a sprocket wheel 29 on the shaft 30 of the traverse cam. Alternatively, the driving connection between the package 10 and the traverse cam may be by spur or bevel gears or a combination of the two or by toothed belts.
