Abstract

835,291. Drawing and reeling wire. BARRON & CROWTHER Ltd. April 3, 1958 [April 3, 1957], No. 10927/57. Class 83 (4). A wire drawing and/or coiling machine comprises a drum and a spindle rotatably mounted coaxially, the spindle having secured to it remote from the spindle axis means for guiding wire on to the drum, and drive means operatively associated with both the spindle and the drum, so that, if one is prevented from rotating, the other will rotate, and if the other is prevented from rotation, the one will rotate in the opposite direction. In one form, Fig. 1, the drum 14 is rotatably mounted on the spindle 12 which is itself mounted on bearings 13 in a frame 33. A motor 16 secured to the inner surface of the drum carries a pinion 24 meshing with a gear 23 keyed to the spindle 12. Wire 21 passes through the spindle 12 and is coiled on to the drum by a pulley 18 mounted on an arm 17 carried by the spindle. Rotation of the drum is prevented by the counterbalancing weight of the motor 16. In a modification the motor is mounted concentrically with the spindle and the drum is normally prevented from rotating by the addition of a separate counterweight, which can however be removed, and the spindle then held stationary by a locking pin so that the drum is rotated. In another form, Fig. 4, the winding pulley 45 is carried by a plate 43 on which are also mounted five rollers 76-79 so that they extend over the drum 40 by increasing amounts and in operation urge the wire along the drum. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the drum has two annular portions 86, 87 the latter being of slightly larger diameter. The plate 84 carrying the winding pulley 91 also carries a pulley 92 serving to take wire off the portion 86 and wind it on to the portion 87 where because of the larger diameter it will be under greater tension. In the vertically arranged machine shown in Fig. 8, the motor 108 is eccentrically mounted within the drum 106 and drives a gear 112 keyed to the spindle 101 through a belt 109 and gear 111. Beneath the drum is a rotatable platform 113 carrying a wire receiver which is also locked to the drum by latches 117. Either the drum or the spindle may be held stationary by a latch 115 or a pin 121 respectively.
