Abstract
357,786. Winding wire, rope, thread, &c. LARMUTH & BULMER, Ltd., Todleben Iron Works, Unwin Street, Salford, Manchester, and HUGHES, T. C., 2, Oxnam Crescent, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Sept. 27, 1930, No. 28958. [Class 120 (ii).] The traverse mechanism of a machine for winding wire, thread, cord, rope, &c. on bobbins or spools comprises a shaft 6 on which are a loose driven gear 7 and a fast gear 10, Fig. 1, both in mesh with a pinion 13, Fig. 3, which rotates about its own axis, or revolves about the shaft axis, the rotation of the pinion 13 being prevented or permitted automatically or at will to cause the shaft 6 to rotate in one or the other direction whilst the loose gear 7 is driven constantly in the same direction. A belt drive with fast and loose pulleys 37, 38 rotates the bobbin 1 through a slot and projection coupling 32, and, through change speed wheels 40, 41, 42, a gear 9 compounded with the bevel gear 7. A disc 11 between the bevels 7, 10 carries the bevel pinion 13 on a radial stud 14 in a gap 12 in its periphery, a block 16 with a locking tooth 18 meshing with the pinion 13 being mounted on a ring 15 which is secured to the disc 11 by screws 20 through slots 21 which allow limited relative circumferential movement between the ring and the disc, a spring 24 tending to maintain engagement of the tooth 18 thus locking the bevel 13 and rotating the bevel 10 with the bevel 7 and moving the traverse carriage 4 which has a nut 8 engaging a thread 5 on the shaft 6. At the ends of the traverse, stops 43, 44 adjustable on a rod 31 are engaged causing an abutment on a tumbler lever to be brought into and out of engagement with stops 25 on the ring 15. The abutment arrests the ring 15 and therefore also the disc 11 with the tooth 18 out of engagement with the pinion 13, thus causing the shaft 6 to be rotated in the reverse direction, and the traverse carriage to be reversed. The rod 31 may be retained in the end positions by a spring plunger &c. The material being wound passes over pulleys 46, 47, 48, Fig. 1, the pulley 47 being weighted by a sliding block 51 carrying a roller 52 which on excessive tension moves a lever 53 fulcrumed at 54 and connected by a link 55 &c. to the belt-fork 39 which may also be operated by a hand-lever 56.
