Abstract
222,277. Brooks, J. F. Aug. 16, 1923. Winding-machines; stop-motions; spindle-driving apparatus.-In a yarnwinding machine of the vertical spindle type, traverse mechanism for laying the yarn on the bobbin in successive coils comprises an oscillating arm 69, Figs. 9, 12 carrying a guide 70 and mounted to turn upon a pin 71 which is carried on a plate 72 mounted on a bracket 73, and which is inclined to the horizontal so that the guide 70 will move through a path parallel to the conical part of the bobbin. The arm 69 is oscillated by a rod 78 which is actuated by a bell-crank lever 77 driven from the cam-operated lever 34. The bracket 73 is slidable on a vertical guide bar 74 and is fed upwards thereon by the engagement of a half-nut 88 on a rotary screwed rod 87, the latter being driven at variable speed by friction gear 106, 107 from a shaft 91 interrmittently rotated by a ratchet wheel 92 and a pawl 93 mounted on an arm 94 and actuated through the link 99 by an oscillating lever 96. The half-nut is carried by a spring-pressed member 89 fulcrumed at 90 on the bracket 73 and actuated' by a rod 89<a> connected to the arm 81, and may be disengaged from the rod 87 and, together with the bracket 73, raised or lowered by hand. When the machine stop-motion raises the driven disc 7 out of engagement-with the driving wheel, a lever 108 simultaneously raises the rod 87 by means of a collar 110 and disengages the friction discs 106, 107. The stop-motion comprises the toggle levers 50, 51 connected to a feeler 56 carrying a yarn guide 57 and pivoted at their outer ends respectively to the machine frame and to a lever 53. The lever 51 is weighted at 65 and the system is balanced by the yarn when under normal conditions. If the yarn should break, Fig. 8, or the tension rise dangerously, Fig. 7, the levers 50, 51 are displaced and a rod 46, Fig. 6 pivoted to the arm 53 is moved and rotates a two-armed spider 42 on the spindle 1 causing the rollers 43 thereon to run up inclines 45 on a stationary disc 44 and thereby lift the driven disc 7 out of engagement with the driving disc 12. Each spindle 1, Figs. 1 and 2 is driven by friction discs 12, 7, the discs 12 being mounted on a horizontal shaft 13 driven at variable speed through friction wheels 15, 16, the latter of which is mounted on a dead shaft 19 in a yoke 21 and is driven by a belt 25 and pulley 24 from the drum 26. To obtain a variable speed of drive the wheel 16 is traversed across the face of the wheel 15 bv a lever 34 and a cam 33 mounted on a shaft 32 and actuated through gearing 30, 31 from the driving-shaft 27.
