Abstract

1,101,796. Winding yarn ; stop motion. LEESONA CORPORATION. 27 May, 1965 [1 July, 1964], No. 22573/65. Heading DID and DIJ. In a winding-machine in which a driving- drum rotates a take-up package carried by an arm which, when the yarn-supply fails, moves to an inoperative position such that the package is out of contact with the drum, means are provided to disconnect the drive to the drum before the arm is moved to the inoperative position. The invention is described as applied to the kind of machine described in Specifications 704931 and 969775, in which on failure of the yarn supply, the package is raised off the drum, brought to a halt on a brake B, back-rotated by a roller R to unwind a piecing- length, and returned to brake B to stop its back-rotation; at this point, a piecing-operation, also initiated by the failure of the yarn, is completed, and the package is moved back to the drum. In the apparatus so described, when the package is moved off the drum, it is rotating rapidly, so that the yarn may be spoiled when it is braked at B. The present invention seeks to meet this disadvantage by stopping the drive to the drum, and hence the rotation of the package, before the latter is separated from the drum. In Fig. 3, the drum D is, during winding, clutched to a driven shaft 16 on which it is rotatably mounted; to this end, it is connected by sliding pins 134 to a driven clutch part 128 urged by a spring to engage a driving clutchpart 126 fastened to the shaft. The latter rotates in bearings in a part 97 fixed to the frame. This carries a ring 100 on which a second ring 108 is rotatably mounted. As ring 108 rotates, cam-surfaces on the two rings cause it to be displaced to the left, bringing a surface 122 to engage a surface 130 on driven clutch apart 128, causing the latter to be braked and displaced out of contact with the driving part. The package is carried by a cranked arm 28 on a support 32 Fig. 1 carried by an arm 38 pivoted at 40, so that the package can be moved off the driving-drum D when the arm is displaced; the arrangement of the package in the arm 28 and the mounting of the arm 28 in the support are such as to allow conical packages to be wound. During winding, the arm 38 is held in position by a pin 50 which engages a shoulder on a latch bar 44 pivoted centrally at 42 to the frame and pulled down at its left-hand end by a spring 60. The ring 108 is maintained in a position which keeps the clutch parts engaged, against the pull of a spring 150, by a pin 116 on the end of a lever 114 depending from the ring, which engages a shoulder 140 in a slot 138 in a bar 136 which is held against movement to the right by a pin 144 carried by the arm 38 which engages the left-hand end of a slot 141. When the yarn fails, shafts 156 and 66 rotate anti-clockwise as described in the Specifications referred to. Rotation of shaft 156 raises a link 164 to lift bar 136 to free pin 116 and allow spring 150 to rotate lever 114 and hence the ring 108, whereby the clutch-parts are separated and the roller D is braked. By the time this action is completed, shaft 66 has rotated sufficiently for a cam-lobe 69 to engage and raise the left-hand end of latch-bar 44 and release the pin 50 so that arm 38 is free to pivot to the right to lift the package off the drum and bring it against the unwinding-roller R. The pin 144 moving to the right, frees bar 136 to be pulled to the right by a spring 148, so that pin 116, which has taken up a position in the slot 138, again engages shoulder 140, and pin 144 again engages the forward end of slot 141. Thus, when the arm 38 is returned to winding position as described in the Specifications referred to, the bar 136 is moved to the left by pin 144 and ring 108 is restored, through pin 116 and lever 114, to a position where the brake is let off the drum and the clutch parts are reengaged. When the latch bar is no longer engaged by cam-lobe 69, it is returned by a spring 60, re-engaging pin 50. As the latch bar rises and falls, it moves the brake B into and out of operative position. The position of pin 144 is adjustable.
