In a drum winding machine the package-forming tube 1 is supported for rotation at the outer ends of arms 8, 9 which form part of a cradle arrangement 11 which is pivotally mounted by means of pins 31, 32 on either side of a closed casing 33; the casing 33 houses an electric torque motor 66 having a pinion 64 in mesh with a toothed sector 51, the latter being pivotally mounted on the pin 32 and drivingly connected to the cradle so that energization of the motor 66 causes pivotal movement of the cradle to bring the tube 1 either into pressing engagement with its driving roller (Fig. 2 not shown) or to lift it out of engagement therewith. Alternatively the toothed sector could be fixed to the casing 33 and the driving motor adapted to pivot with the cradle 11. A further toothed sector 79 is similarly mounted on the other pivot pin 31 and transmits pivotal movement of the yoke 11 to a gear 78 which is operatively connected to a potentiometer device 77 which may be used to control the supply of current to the motor 66 and thus to regulate the pressure between the package and the driving roller as desired. The arm 9 is pivotally mounted by means of a pin 14 and may be moved outwardly from the tube 1 against the pressure of a spring 15 to release or replace the package 3 or tube 1. Partspherical heads 4, 5 supported on axially aligned pins 6, 7 at the ends of the arms 8, 9 are adapted to receive the tube 1. Thread is distributed on the package by means of a guide attached to a reciprocating rod (Fig. 2 not shown). The motor may be connected as part of a stop-motion device to lift the package out of driving relation with the drive roll in the event of thread breakage or on completion of the package.
