Abstract

963,424. Rope stranding machines. J. GODDERIDGE April 30, 1963 [May 10, 1962], No.16946/63. Heading D1T. A rope stranding machine comprises a first frame 7a, 8a, 9a spaced axially from a second frame 7b, 8b, 9b, the two frames being rotatable about a common axis defined by the shafts 1a, 1b and being driven in the same direction via a drive shaft 6 by belts 4a, 4b. A take-up drum 21 is carried by a cradle 18 mounted on the shafts 1a, 1b the cradle 18 having its centre of gravity below the common axis of the shafts 1a, 1b so that it will not tend to rotate with the shafts 1a, 1b. The rope 12 passes through the shaft 1a, radially outwards over pulleys 11a, 10a, along the tubular arm 8a, across a gap and thence into the tubular arm 8b, radially inwardly over pulleys 10b, 11b, through the shaft 1b, over a capstan hauling device 19, and thence over further guide pulleys 20d to the take-up drum 21. The pulleys 20d are part of a traversing device 20 depositing the rope in orderly coils and in successive layers around the periphery of the drum 21,the arm 20a being rocked about the shaft 20b for this purpose. The use of the two separate frames 7a, 8a, 9a and 7b, 8b, 9b is stated to reduce any tendency to the generation of vibration. The arms 9a, 9b and masses 24a, 24b act on balancing means.
