Abstract

735,630. Wire laying machines. NATIONALSTANDARD CO. Dec. 14, 1953 [Dec. 31, 1952], No. 34789/53. Class 109. A rotor unit for a wire laying machine made up of a plurality of individual rotor units, comprises a frame having a bore therein, a tubular rotor journaled in the bore, a pair of cradle means journaled in the rotor and including portions projecting to opposite sides of the rotor and frame, and means for restraining movement of each of the cradle means with respect to the frame. A wirelaying machine made up of a plurality of such units comprises rotor units R1 ... R4 each detachably attached to the frame 16 of the machine and driven from a motor 24 through pulleys 26, 46, shafts 38 and belts 44, 48. The wires W1 ... W7 are stranded in a conventional head 50 being drawn through the machine by a drum 52, driven from the shaft 38 through gearing 68, 70, and driving a take-up drum 56 by a belt 72, the traversing being effected by a device 58. The rotor units each comprise a frame 110 in which a rotor 130, supported on bearings 124 and driven by the toothed bolt 48 through a drive surface 134, rotates. Journalled within the rotor 130 are cradle means 138, 139 in which spools 153 of wire are supported on axles 152, the cradles being prevented from rotation by magnets 155, 157 on cradle and frame respectively. The wire W1 from the L.H. spool 153 of the unit R4 is led through the hollow centre of the cradle unit against a guide 162 and through an inclined bore 163 and guide 164, the latter being part of a wire-threading hole 135 in the rotor 130. From the guide 164 it passes to a flyer 300 attached by guides 312 to the rotor of the next unit and rotating about a shaft 302 carried by the end of the cradle unit. The wire W2 from the R.H. spool 153 is led down through the flyer 300, over a guide 311 and then through bores 235 in successive rotors, the bores 235 being positioned in a circle passing between the two stationary magnets 155, 157 or 255, 257. The rotor unit, Fig. 3, differs from that of Fig. 2 in that the rotor is centred by three roller assemblies 212 which extend through the frame 210 of the rotor unit, the roller 218 being carried on an eccentrically adjustable shaft 214 and being furnished with a V-form exterior surface which engages and positions a corresponding V-form 231 in the rotor 230.
