A sliver coiler comprises a delivery device and a driving member rotatable about a first axis, a support for a sliver can carried by the driving member and independently rotatable about a second axis eccentric to the first, a fixed wheel and positive connecting means between the wheel and the support to prevent the latter rotating about the second axis during movement about the first axis. The apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a coiler head 12 through a trumpet guide 24, draft rollers 25, and inclined passage 13 of which sliver is fed into a can C on a support 10 which carries a stud 30 received in a bearing 31 in the disc portion 32 of a worm gear 33: a drive shaft 18, through bevel gears 35 and 36, shaft 37 and worm 38, rotates the gear 33 on a fixed stud 40 about a vertical axis through the point A, thus bodily moving the support and can in a circular path B centred on A : simultaneously therewith, an idle gear 45, loosely mounted on a stud in the disc 32, is swung about the point A and rotated on its own axis by rolling on a pinion 42 fixed on the stud 40, such rotation effecting a corresponding but reverse rotation of the gear 44 fixed on the stud 30 so that the can C is rotated backwardly and maintains a fixed orientation indicated at D. In a modification, Fig. 3, the gears 42, 44, 45, are replaced by a sprocket 50 secured to the stud 30 of the support 10a, a sprocket 51 fixed at the axis of the gear 33a, and a chain 52.
