Abstract

852,297. Textile doubling and twisting. SCRAGG & SONS Ltd. E. Feb. 24, 1959 [March 27, 1958], No. 9801/58. Class 120(2). A doubling apparatus comprises a carrier 3 which carries a first package 6 and is rotably mounted on a rotatable hollow spindle 9, means which are operable to-hold the carrier 3 stationary during rotation of the spindle or to rotate it independently of the spindle and have a passage for radial movement of a yarn into or out of the spindle, a second package 10 from which a yarn is drawn via the spindle 9 and a path rotating about the first package to be doubled with a yarn from the package 6, and means for drawing the doubled yarns from the mechanism. The spindle 9 is rotated by a belt 11; the package 10 may be driven by the belt 23; and the carrier 3 is mounted for rotation by means such as are described in Specification 847,004, the lower bevel gear 1 of which is mounted on the spindle for rotation by the belt 12. If both packages are held stationary the yarns are doubled without any addition of twist. Either or both packages may be rotated in either direction to add to or decrease the twist of either or both of the yarns. The doubled yarns are drawn off the packages by a capstan 16 driven at a selected speed. In a second embodiment (not shown) in which the positions of the package 10 and the capstan 16 are interchanged, the direction of motion of the second yarn is reversed, the first yarn enters the spindle at its upper end, and the yarns are doubled at a point in the lower part of the spindle.
