A yarn winding arrangement comprises a turntable 11, Fig. 2, rotatable about an axis 25, a plurality of winding positions spaced apart on the turntable, each winding position comprising a takeup spindle 13 and a supply spindle 15 each rotatable about an individual axis on the turntable, and a common drive 39 for rotating the takeup spindles 13 and the turntable 11. The supply spindles 15 are fitted with nearly empty bobbins 44, the yarn from which is to be added to the yarn already on bobbins 43 on the takeup spindles 13. The spindles 13, 15 all carry whorls 37, the whorls of the spindles 15 being individually braked by tensioned belts 51 and the whorls of the spindles 13 being rotated by a common belt 39. The tension in the belts 51 is adjusted by screws 55. The drive belt 39 passes over a drive pulley 65, Fig. 1, and hence is spaced away from the whorl of one takeup spindle 13, namely the spindle 13a. An operator at a station 111 can remove an empty supply bobbin from the associated supply spindle 15 and replace it by a nearly empty bobbin 44 taken from a supply channel 151, the yarn ends from the new supply bobbin and the takeup bobbin on the spindle 13a being drawn out by hand and placed together under a sewing machine 125 that is used to sew the yarn ends together. The resultant slack is taken up by grasping a handle 145 and swinging an arm 139 clockwise about a support 141 so as to bring a motor driven friction wheel 133, on the arm, against the periphery of the upper flange of the supply bobbin on the spindle 15. When the arm 139 is in this position a lug 147 on the arm 139 closes a microswitch 149 to energize the motor 137 driving the wheel 133. The turntable 11 is held against rotation by a brake shoe 79, Fig. 3, carrying an indexing pin 99 co-operating with holes 107 in the turntable. When the operator actuates a switch 109, Fig. 1, a solenoid 91, Fig. 3, causes the brake 79 and the pin 99 to be temporarily displaced from the turntable whereupon the turntable rotates by a further increment until the pin 99 engages in the next succeeding hole and the solenoid 91 is automatically deenergized.
