Abstract

951,118. Twisting yarns; stop motions; creels. T. M. M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. Nov. 17, 1961 [Nov. 22,1960], No. 40162/60. Headings DID and D1J. Each unit of a twisting machine comprises a package support positively rotated by a drive determining the rate of feed, a driven take-up means for twisting the yarn so fed, means for declutching and braking, or otherwise stopping, the package support, and a yarn-detector which when the yarn fails or slackens operates the means for stopping the package support and, if if desired, the take-up spindle. In the case of a double-sided ring frame for twisting yarns of glass fibre, a two-tier creel has a package 11 for each take-up spindle 12. The packages are driven by shafts 16 and the drive can be stopped by electromagnetic clutches 18 brakes 32 being also provided. The spindles have brakes 36. Between the creel and the take-up the yarn passes through vertically-spaced guide-eyes 20 which prevent the yarn vibrating and between which the thread detector is provided. In one form, Fig. 2, the detector comprises a rod 21 urged by a spring 24 towards engagement with a pivoted lever 26, but prevented by so moving by the tension of the yarn. When the yarn fails, the spring moves the rod to tilt lever 26 into contact with lever 28 to operate a microswitch 29 and energize solenoids 30, 31. The former controls the clutch and brake of the package spindles and the latter the brake of the take-up spindle. In Fig. 6 the detector comprises an arm 37 rotatably mounted on a shaft 38 and kept out of contact with a lever 40 by the yarn tension against the tension of a spring 39. When the yarn fails the arm 37 rotates to rotate the lever 40 to operate a microswitch 29. Normally, lever 40 is held by a spring 41 which also holds the lever in the position to which it is displaced by arm 37.
