Abstract

A Spinning &c., apparatus comprises at least two driven pots containing slubbings obtained from a carding-engine, feeding-means for entraining the slubbings so that they are twisted between the pots and the means, and take-up means at which the threads are twisted and collected internally or externally as a doubled yarn. The slubbings may be of asbestos and be doubled with reinforcing threads of metal or glass. The pots Fig. 1 (not shown), have rotating heads 13, whereby as the slubbings are withdrawn by feed-rollers 21, 24, 29, they are converted into threads 19, the two threads being brought together by a guide 20. Thread 25 from a bobbin 26 also passes to the feed-rollers via the guide, and threads from bobbins 28 pass directly to the rollers. The combined threads 30 are taken up on a ring-spindle 40 when the traveller is of selected weight. The rollers serve to equalize the component lengths in the doubled yarn and may stretch the threads; the upper rollers bear on the lower ones by gravity or resiliently-applied force. Break-detectors 96-100 are provided and feeler 95 Fig. 5 (not shown), determines when the take-up bobbin is filled. A control system for bringing the pots, rollers and the take-up spindle into and out of operation, is described (Fig. 5 not shown). Each pot has a lid 10 which can be lowered by a handle 107 to be held against the pull of a spring 102 by an electromagnet 103 energized by manually closing a switch. The pots are driven when clutches 14 are engaged and can be braked at 18; the take-up spindle has a brake 32 and the upper roller can be moved on or off the driven roller 21 by rocking arms 79. These parts are operatively linked to a lever 51 operated by a pedal 50 against a spring 49. A second lever 81 carries a resilient pin 112; when pedal 50 is depressed, lever 51 displaces the pin for it to spring back and hold the lever in depressed position when the pedal is released. To release the lever, the lever 81 is rocked to withdraw the pin 112 when a pedal 80 is depressed or an electromagnet 85 energized. In operation, with the pot-lids closed and the electromagnets 103 energized, pedal 50 is depressed. The brakes 18, 32 are released, the clutches 14 are engaged and roller 24 is lowered. Electromagnet 86 is inoperative so that the pin holds the lever 50 in depressed position. These conditions are maintained until the receiving bobbin is filled or until a thread breaks or runs out, when one or other of the detectors 95....100 completes a circuit to operate a relay to light an indicator and energize electromagnet 86 so that pin 112 is withdrawn to unlock lever 51 which accordingly rises and stops the associated parts. When a break occurring in one of the pots is repaired, slight pressure is exerted on the pedal 50 to lightly engage the drive and retension the silver. Other arrangements of the pots are described.
