Abstract

416,681. Winding yarns or threads. WALTON, N., 4, Larkfield Gardens, Owlcotes Road, Pudsey, near Leeds, and DAVY, J., Bridge House, Haworth, near Keighley, both in Yorkshire. March 22, 1933, No. 8608. [Class 120 (ii).] In a machine for winding yarns or threads into cops &c., the building of the cop on the winding spindle is effected by an oscillating and rising thread guide controlled by a cam actuated by gearing from a cone bearing against and driven by the cop being wound. As shown the thread guide 25, Figs. 2 and 4, is carried by an arm on a shaft 26 mounted in a frame 27<g> guided by bearings on vertical rods 33, 33<a>, the shaft also carrying an arm controlled by the cam 30 on a shaft actuated by worm gearing from the spindle 27b of the cone 27 which is freely rotatable in the frame 27<g>. At the beginning of the winding the cone is rotated by a friction washer 32 fixed to the winding spindle 2 and, when the heel of the cop has been formed, the cone is rotated by the partlyformed cop and, with the frame 27<g> and threadguide, is raised gradually on the rods 33, 33<a> ; the weight of the frame &c. is counterbalanced by a weight 34<g> connected thereto by a cord 34 passing over pulleys 34<a>, 34b. The lower bearings 3 of the spindle 2 are carried by the arm 5 of a bell-crank lever, the other arm 5a of which is pivoted in a bracket 6<a> on the machine frame and acted upon by a spring 7 which tends to move the spindle to an inclined position ; a catch 8 pivoted to the arm 5a normally engages a slotted bracket 9, to maintain the spindle 2 in the vertical position, and projects through the bracket in front of the arm 10 of a pivoted bell-crank lever 10<a> connected by a rod 11 to a pedal lever normally maintained in the horizontal position by a spring. The machine is stopped when a cop is completed by the frame 27<g> contacting with an arm 35 embracing the rod 33 and carried by a rod 35<a> pivoted to levers 36, 36<a> on a vertical rod 37 slidably mounted in the machine frame with its lower end engaging a pivoted lever 38 disposed beneath the arm 8 and normally resting upon a projection on the bracket 9 ; the raising of the arm 35 moves a notch in the lever 36 into the path of a projection 40<a> on a disc 40 carried by an oscillating shaft 41 and causes the rod 37 to be raised and lift the notched arm 8 out of engagement with the bracket 9 when the spring 7 forces the winding spindle into the inclined position where the spindle ceases to be driven and engages a fixed brake shoe ; the cone and its associated parts are prevented from falling by a spring 2<w> fixed to the frame 27<g> and engaging the rod 33<a> ; the pedal lever may also be used to move the spindle to the vertical position or to stop it. The yarn or thread in its passage from the supply bobbin to the thread guide 25 passes between tension discs and under a detector lever 24 which is pivoted to the vertical rod 37 and has a lateral arm 24d engaging a notch in a lever 42 also pivoted to the rod so that, if the thread breaks, the detector lever is moved upwards by its counterweight 24<c> and moves the lever 42 into the path of a projection on a disc 44 carried by an oscillating shaft 45 linked to the shaft 41, thus causing the rod 37 to be raised to stop the drive of the winding spindle. The discs 18, 18<a> of the tension device, Fig. 10, are mounted on a casing 20, the disc 18<a> being fixed to a spindle 19 journalled in the casing and the disc 18 being loose on the spindle and pressed against the disc 18<a> by the arm 21<a> of a bell-crank lever pivoted on a part 22 of the casing and having its other arm 21 engaged by one arm of a weighted bell-crank lever 22a pivoted in the casing ; the weight 22b on the lever 22<a> may be adjusted to vary the tension on the thread. The spindle 19 carries a ratchet wheel 19<a> actuated by a pawl 60 linked to the oscillating shaft 45 to rotate the tension discs slowly and when the winding- spindle is moved to stop the drive, the pawl 60 is raised out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 19<a> by a lever connected to the arm 5.
