711,688. Combined yarn clearer and slub detector and stop motion. SPENGLER, H. Sept. 24, 1952, No. 23942/52. Class 120(2) A combined yarn clearer and slub detector and stop motion device comprises a clearer of the kind in which yarn or thread passes through a slot in a blade or between a pair of relatively adjustable blades, pivotally mounted so as to be urged against a stop by adjustable resilient pressure means in order to hold the clearer resiliently in the path of the yarn, whereby when the clearer encounters a slub, the tension on the yarn or thread will move the clearer away from the stop against the action of the resilient pressure means to actuate stop motion mechanism. As shown the clearer 4 comprises an adjustable slotted blade 32 through which yarn 7 passes from a swift 5 to a winding-on bobbin 6, being guided by rollers 8 and guide eye 9. The clearer is mounted on a pivot 10 and has a heel 11 which coacts with a tooth 12a on a cam disc 12 mounted on a spindle 14. Also on the spindle 14 and angularly adjustable 'by virtue of a screw 17 and slot 18 with respect to cam disc 12 is a disc 15 to which is attached a hooked upper end of a drop rod 16 by means of a pin 19. The disc 15 is adjusted so that the drop rod 16 is situated just beyond its top dead-centre position. A coiled spring holds the clearer carrier block 35 against a fixed stop such that when the clearer encounters a slub it rotates about its pivot against the action of said spring and its heel 11 strikes the tooth 12a of cam disc 12 thus turning the disc 15 sufficiently to move the pin 19 over its dead-centre position, thus allowing the drop rod 16 to descend. The lower end of the rod 16 is attached to a lever 22 pivoted at 23 and loaded by a weight 24 hung from the lower end of a connecting rod 25 which hangs from a brake lever 26 arranged to actuate a brake 27 operating on the swift 5. Thus when the rod 16 drops the swift 5 is stopped and at the same time a forward extension of lever 22 lifts the bobbin 6, thus releasing the tension on the yarn and disengaging the reel 6 from its driving wheel 36.
