Abstract

723,269. Yarn detector mechanism. SCRAGG, Ltd., S. & E., and SCRAGG, F. Sept. 16, 1953 [July 15, 1952], No. 17782/52. Class 120 (2). Yarn detector mechanism for a yarn winding and twisting machine of the kind in which the spindle is driven by a belt, comprises a yarn guide on the upper end of a substantially vertical pivoted arm having a weighted tail which falls when the yarn passing through the guide breaks or fails, to effect the withdrawal of the spindle from its driving belt and an arm carried by a counterweighted lever which is normally held in an inoperative position by a locking member and adapted when released by the locking member to engage under the tail and lift the latter to move the yarn guide into a convenient position for threading up. As shown yarn guides 1 are mounted on the upper end of an arm 2 pivoted on a horizontal axle 3 and are each provided with a weighted tail 5. Yarns 6 drawn through the guides 1 normally hold the arms 2, &c. in the position shown in Fig. 1. When a yarn 6 breaks or fails the associated weighted tail falls and this movement is used to operate a stop motion as described in Specification 723,154. In order to re-thread the yarn guide 1 a lever 7 pivoted on the bracket 4 is provided. This lever 7 has an extension 8 disposed under the weighted tail 5 and is counterweighted so that if free to move, the extension 8 will move into engagement with the tails 5 and hold them and consequently the guides 1 in a position for threading up as shown in Fig. 3. A lever 9 pivoted on the bracket 4 is associated with lever 7 or the extension 8 thereof and is adapted to hold the extension 8 in the inoperative position shown in Fig. 1, or release it when re-threading of any of the guides 1 is necessary. After re-threading the lever 9 is turned to move the extension 8 into and hold it in its inoperative position. When used for wet doubling the lever 7 is provided with a forwardly projecting arm 10 carrying a yarn guiding roller 11, which operates in conjunction with a trough 12.
