[Class 120 (ii).] Apparatus for twisting and winding yarns comprises a rotating casing 4 carrying a centrally disposed bobbin tube 38 upon which the yarn is wound and guides 52, 53, which effect the twisting, the yarn, or yarns if a number are to be twisted together, passing from the guides to the tube through tensioning and guiding devices carried by a reciprocating rod 17 which is arranged also to raise the tube to build the cop by ratchet gear 41, means being provided to stop the apparatus upon breakage of the yarn or completion of the winding. Additional twist may be imparted by means of, for example, a ring mounted above the guide 52 and rotated in the opposite direction from the casing. The casing 4 is rotated by a disc 1 about a bush 5 carried by a bracket 6, which is pivoted on a bolt 7 and maintained in position with the disc 1 and rim 3 of the casing in gear by means of ratchet mechanism 9, 10. The bush 5 is stationary and is provided with a worm 12 so that, as the casing rotates, a worm wheel 13 gearing with the worm 12 is rotated and a cam 15 on the shaft of the worm wheel 13 oscillates the rod 17 against a return spring 18 to lay the yarn. The rod 17 is arranged to operate the ratchet gear 41 and so to elevate a screwed rod 39 which raises the tube 38 in the bush 5, wherein it is held by a friction ring and cap nut 59, to build the cop. The tensioning and guiding means comprise a support 20 carrying thread hooks 31, 32, 33, an arm 22 mounted on a spring-controlled pin 21 and carrying conical rollers 23, 24, and a spring- controlled double-armed lever 27, 27<1> pivoted about the pin 21 and carrying conical rollers 25, 26 co-operating with the rollers 23, 24 and thread hooks 29, 30 co-operating with the thread hooks 31, 32, 33, the yarn passing around the rollers and hooks as shown and being guided on to the tube by a grooved roller 34 carried by the arm 27. As the yarn is traversed upwards along the conical surface of the cop the arm 27 is moved outwards and the arm 27<1> inwards, the reverse movement taking place during the downward traverse by reason of the centrifugal force of an adjustable weight 28 on the arm 27<1>, whereby the tension of the yarn is maintained uniform. When the cop is fully wound the bobbin tube engages the hook 52 and arrests the supply of the yarn, which thereupon breaks and the arm 271 swings outward and engages and releases the ratchet gear 9, 10 so that a spring 57 rotates the bracket 6 and moves the casing 4 from the driving-disc 1 ; the same operation is effected in the event of ordinary breakage.
