Abstract

401,483. Controlling delivery in wire and like winding-machines. JONES, G. V. WYNNE-, O'SHAUGHNESSY, H. E. P., LISLE, W. G. DE, and SOPER, H. N., (trading as SHAWNDEL TOOL CO.) ; 99, Regent Street, London. Oct. 13, 1932, No. 28572. [Class 120 (ii).] In delivery-controlling devices of the kind comprising a rotary flyer or guide arm and a stationary bobbin for use in winding bobbins, spools, cops, hanks, and balls of yarn, thread, cord, rope, wire and the like, particularly for winding fine wire for electrical purposes, and wherein the flyer is controlled by a brake adapted to be applied when the draw-off tension is relaxed, the flyer is resiliently connected to a brake in such manner that the pull of the flyer places the connection under load prior to the application of the brake and the connection and brake exercise control during winding to impart a working tension. The flyer 3 is carried by a head-piece 13 secured to a spindle 12 mounted in ball bearings in a casing 10, which serves as a brake drum and is mounted in a support 9 provided with a peg 8 fitting tightly into the bobbin support. A light coil spring 16 is secured to the spindle 12 and bears directly or through shoes 17 on the surface 10<a> of the brake drum, so that when starting-up the spring 16 yields and frictional slip occurs after the flyer has gained momentum, and when stopping the flyer will stop at once or, if it continues to rotate, the brake will grip as the speed is reduced and the spring 16 in unwinding will reverse the rotation of the flyer and rewind any slack. The spring is hooked to a shoulder on the base piece 12<a> of the spindle 12 so that it is automatically disengaged upon reverse rotation of the whole device. An auxiliary spring 18 is provided to impose normal pressure on the shoes. The Provisional Specification describes also the application of an air brake to the head-piece when winding fine wire and a friction brake for heavier work.
